The House of Representatives Honors Nils Stolzlechner, General Manager of Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort
Special recognition for leadership during recovery process following Hurricane María
(Río Grande, July 25, 2019) - The House of Representatives distinguishes Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort’s General Manager Nils Stolzlechner as one of the island’s great leaders in the recovery process during the aftermath of Hurricane María. Stolzlechner was honored for his leadership over significant relief efforts to reopen the resort for first-response and private electricity workers almost immediately after the hurricane hit - an effort which also kept many team members employed during the island-wide crisis.
Stolzlechner, an experienced general manager and veteran Wyndham team member, was appointed to the role and moved to Puerto Rico just one month before Hurricanes Irma and María made landfall.
“During the aftermath of Hurricane María, Nils not only helped his personnel, giving them shelter and providing water and food, but he also directed, with the resort’s volunteers, an effort with the local community to help establish local housing for the elderly. Nils demonstrated strong leadership skills and love to his new home in Puerto Rico.” said the motion from Representative Víctor Parés Otero.
“When I arrived to Puerto Rico, I had no idea I would experience the worst catastrophe the island has had to endure in its modern history. Through it all, I witnessed the resiliency, strength and bravery of the Puerto Rican community. It is my honor and privilege to be part of this new chapter for Puerto Rico,” said Nils Stolzlechner.
The official House of Representatives motion was presented in a small ceremony held in the resort’s restaurant Iguanas Cocina Puertorriqueña, located in the recently reopened Clubhouse. All major renovations and repairs needed in the resort after the hurricanes were completed earlier this year.

Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort Vows to Eliminate Plastic Straws
Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort Vows to Eliminate Plastic Straws
Resort joins movement to protect natural resources from the dangers of disposable plastic (Río Grande, February 6, 2019) Reaffirming its commitment to its community and the restoration of Puerto Rico, Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort announces a new initiative to eliminate plastic straw use on the resort. As part of its continued efforts to support Puerto Rico’s natural wildlife and sustainable future, the team at Wyndham Grand began an initiative last year to deplete its existing supply of plastic straws by the start of 2019. The resort now offers guests biodegradable straws to be used in cocktails and non-alcoholic beverages. Plastic straws will be available by guest request.
“We are fully committed to do everything we can to protect the wonderful natural resources that surround Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort and inspire the magic of this island,” said General Manager Nils Stolzlechner. “Our guests are interested in the local ecology and appreciative of our efforts to support it – and many of them look for ways to participate. This initiative helps us take a step towards a safer environment for wildlife that our teams and guests can all be part of, while changing our processes for the better.”
Plastic straws are not biodegradable and take hundreds of years to break down. Thousands end up in the oceans, posing real danger to animals such as sea turtles and fish. According to the World Economic Forum, the plastic in our oceans will outweigh the fish by 2050. The resort, which offers community education around annual sea turtle (tinglar) nesting season in partnership with the Dept. of Natural and Environmental Resources, actively works to protect sea turtle nests by blocking access to the beach at sunset each summer.
The resort, recently named one of TIME Magazine’s 2018 World’s Greatest Places for its groundbreaking efforts in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria, participates in a variety of local environmental efforts to support the island. Earlier this year, the resort presented a donation of $16,000 to the National Forest Foundation (NFF), to aid in the restoration and recovery of neighboring El Yunque National Rainforest, which was damaged during Hurricane María. Last July, a group of volunteers from the resort visited María de la Cruz Cave in Loíza to help the ecological restoration of the bee community there, and plant endemic trees in the local park.
The resort, its golf courses, and restaurants, are fully operational after multi-million dollar renovations were completed earlier this year.

Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort Unveils a Totally Renovated Dining Experience
Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort Unveils a
Totally Renovated Dining Experience
Two New Restaurants Debut as Part of Upscale Resort’s Multi-Million Dollar Renovation
RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort, most recently recognized as one of TIME Magazine’s 2018 World’s Greatest Places, debuts an exciting phase of its multi-million dollar renovation with the opening of two restaurants: Roots Coastal Kitchen and Iguana’s Cocina Puertorriqueña. These new culinary venues join a growing portfolio of onsite dining options at the lush oceanfront resort. A total of nine restaurants and bars include the recently opened Caicu Bar & Tapas, serving handcrafted rum cocktails and international cuisine; and Marbella, serving up Caribbean specialties and American classics.
Unveiled in October 2018, Roots Coastal Kitchen is a farm-to-table concept overseen by Executive Chef Ramón Carrillo in collaboration with “Top Chef” alums Jeff McInnis and Janine Booth – owners of famed Root & Bone restaurant in NYC. Inspired by traditional Southern comfort food that thoughtfully blends an elevated Caribbean personalization, Roots Coastal Kitchen is a one-of-a-kind addition to Puerto Rico’s culinary scene. Stemming from a pop-up collaboration with the resort in 2016, Chef McInnis was passionate about creating a more permanent dining outlet that would embrace the island’s local flavors, indigenous ingredients, and distinct charm.
Designed by interior design firm Baskervill, the 106-seat restaurant offers garden and ocean views, with warm wooden tones and rustic finishes, coupled with craftsmanship tile work. The eclectic menu features locally-sourced ingredients from nearby purveyors including To-Ricos poultry farm, and Martex Farms in Santa Isabel, Puerto Rico. Fresh ingredients – including mango, pumpkin, watermelon and tomatoes – are showcased within many of the restaurant’s dishes. Swordfish with coconut sticky rice and yellow curry is a signature staple. For more casual fare, a new stove oven allows for artisanal pizzas, and the on-the-go menu offering sandwiches, burgers, salads and light bites. An ice cream bar delights guests with exotic homemade flavors such as Taro Root, Cornbread, Peanut Butter and Mango sorbet.
Opened in mid-December, Iguana’s Cocina Puertorriqueña serves as an upscale dining venue for guests and locals featuring an open kitchen concept and lounge area that will seat up to 105. Serving a fusion of authentic Caribbean favorites and traditional Puerto Rican dishes, the restaurant’s catch of the day is sourced from local fisherman, delivering the freshest seafood on the island. Set beside two championship golf courses, bordered by El Yunque Rainforest’s scenic mountains, the traditional restaurant will be located inside the Clubhouse, which as also been reconstructed to include an Atrium bar and Pro Shop. The space’s bold design details will balance the venue’s soft muted tones and add an element of sophistication.
“Indulging in local cuisine and celebrating culinary traditions within our community makes for an enriching travel experience,” said Nils Stolzlechner, general manager of Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort. “Our food and beverage program has taken shape in 2018, and we will continue to elevate guest offerings with new innovations and amenities in the months ahead.”

Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort supports Loíza’s ecological recovery efforts
Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort supports Loíza’s ecological recovery efforts
(Loíza, June 28, 2018) - A group of volunteers of Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort went to Loíza, in an effort to help with the ecological restoration of one of the more devastated towns after hurricanes Irma and María hit the Island 9 months ago. Members of the hotel’s sales team went inside María de la Cruz Cave to learn more about the bee community situation in the area. The cave is the biggest bee sanctuary in the Island, but new efforts are needed to help grow the population. The coordinators in charge of the project explained that there has only been one queen bee in the last five years. The goal is to develop a bee farm to secure a growing bee population, and they need help with resources and staff. The volunteers also planted endemic trees in the park where the cave is located. They planted retama San José and retama prieta, a kind of tree that is similar to flamboyán and adjusts well to soil and weather conditions in the area. “We have always looked for ways to give back and contribute to improvement in hotels surrounding communities. The hurricanes caused devastation on all levels and that is why we think it is important to pay attention to the problems caused to the environment and to help and being part of the mitigation efforts,” said Nils Stolzlechner, general manager of Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort. Volunteers also participated in a talk about Loíza’s historic and cultural legacy and background. They learned about the origins and use of the turban by slaves and they watched a demonstration of bomba music playing and dancing. Besides the ongoing project in Loíza, the hotel is working or collaborating on different recovery efforts in the East side of the Island, including restoration work in El Yunque, in which they give guests the opportunity to volunteer.

Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort Raises $16,000 to Support National Rainforest Rebuild Project
WYNDHAM GRAND RIO MAR PUERTO RICO GOLF & BEACH RESORT RAISES $16,000 TO SUPPORT NATIONAL RAINFOREST REBUILD PROYECT
Puerto Rico Resort Exceeds Forest Stewardship Fund Donation Goal
RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico (June 4, 2018) – Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort presented a donation of $16,000 to the National Forest Foundation (NFF), raised by resort guests in an effort to aid in the restoration and recovery of neighboring El Yunque National Rainforest, which was damaged during Hurricane Maria. The fundraising program, which began at the resort’s re-opening on March 1, far exceeded its goal of $10,000 thanks to the generosity of the resort community.
The donated funds, which were presented to NFF’s Eastern Region Program Director Mark Shelley, will go directly toward the rebuilding of the scenic Angelito Bridge and Trail that leads to a section of the Río Mameyes, featuring natural pool Charco Las Damas. The river is designated as one of three wild and scenic rivers in the forest because of its biological, historic and recreational values.
“Through NFF’s Forest Stewardship Fund and the resort’s commitment to the island’s recovery, the donations from resort guests will be used to replace the Angelito Bridge and Trail, allowing river access to be restored to the community and visitors of Puerto Rico,” said Mark Shelley, Eastern Region Program Director of the National Forest Foundation. “With the support of the U.S. Forest Service, and local partners like Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort, we are addressing restoration challenges in this beloved forest.”
“In the months leading up to our exciting March 1 re-opening, we knew that a big part of the island’s recovery would be in providing aid to our neighbors,” said Nils Stolzlechner, general manager of Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort. “I am so proud of my team and the contributions achieved, and look forward to having our guests experience the progress made in the beautiful El Yunque.”
This initiative reaffirms the resort’s strong commitment to the protection of its surrounding ecosystem and the environment. The resort has been working closely with the El Yunque National Rainforest team to organize volunteer programs for interested guests, providing a boxed lunch along with transportation to
and from the site location, offering guests the opportunity to become part of the rainforest’s recovery. Reservations can be made with the resort’s front desk, or by emailing yunquevolunteers@gmail.com.
